World Association of Industrial and Technological Research Organizations
WAITRO is an independent, non-governmental and not-for-profit association established in 1970 to promote and encourage cooperation among research and technology organizations (RTOs). It was founded under the auspices of the United Nations system and has consultative status with many of its specialized agencies. WAITRO currently counts 160 members in 76 countries.

Research and technology organizations are institutions that conduct research and development for governmental entities, companies and other customers. Their main objective is to foster innovations that increase economic competitiveness and the quality of life.

Fraunhofer is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization. The research efforts are geared entirely to people’s needs: health, security, communication, energy and the environment. As a result, the work undertaken by researchers and developers has a significant impact on people’s lives. Fraunhofer joined WAITRO in the 1990s and is the new host of the WAITRO Secretariat as of January 2019. Being part of the Global Innovation Family inspired Fraunhofer to develop SAIRA, to bring the family even closer together while growing the network and creating sustainable change.
