The modification of surfaces is an extensive field of research for applications in medicine as well as in the life science sector. By modifying material properties in the boundary layer area, it is possible to specifically influence the function of the surface, keeping bulk properties unimpaired. In addition to modification with plasma technologies, Fraunhofer FEP works with non-thermal electron-beam technology and uses this both for chemical functionalization and for grafting processes.
Electron-beam technology is an extremely gentle method for modifying sensitive substrates. Even simultaneous sterilization of the modified surfaces is possible.
